All-Stars in Queens

This is the 43rd year of the New York Mets franchise and they have sent one player to an All-Star game eighteen times, two players fifteen times, and three players or above only nine times. In 2005, they figure to send at least three players with an outside shot at four or five players.

Year All-Stars
1986 5
1987 5
1985 4
1988 4
1968 3
1969 3
1976 3
1984 3
2000 3

Mike Piazza, and Carlos Beltran are getting voted in by the fans and Pedro Martinez will undoubtedly be picked by Tony LaRussa to pitch for the National League team. Out of those three, only Carlos Beltran is not worthy of an All-Star trip. Despite Mike Piazza’s bad season so far, he is still first in homers and RBIs out of all catchers, fifth in average out of catchers with at least 100 at-bats, fourth in on-base percentage out of catchers with at least 100 at-bats, and second in doubles out of all catchers. His CS% (caught stealing %) is abysmal, but he is solid in all other aspects of catching and 100% deserves to be there. You could argue whether or not Paul Lo Duca or Piazza should start, but Piazza does have the highest VORP out of any catcher and has earned his spot on the team.

There are two Met players who are on the bubble. David Wright and Cliff Floyd have had All-Star seasons so far, but face uphill battles getting chosen for the team. Wright is second in doubles, fifth in homers and RBIs, first in stolen bases, second in average, first in on-base percentage, and third in OPS (on-base plus slugging) among National League third baseman. The three things he has working against him are that he is last in fielding percentage, Scott Rolen leading the voting at third bases despite not deserving it, and Tony LaRussa being the manager. With Rolen going to the game, Aramis Ramirez being a virtual lock for the team, and Tony LaRussa being more familiar with Morgan Ensberg after facing him for a number of years, Wright’s chances of making his first All-Star game are very slim despite him having an All-Star caliber season.

As for Cliff Floyd, there are a lot of outfielders having very good years. Bobby Abreu, Jose Guillen, Carlos Lee, Floyd, Pat Burrell, Jason Bay, Miguel Cabrera, Luis Gonzalez, Adam Dunn, Andruw Jones, Reggie Sanders, and Jim Edmonds are having All-Star type years, but I think Abreu, Floyd, Cabrera, Lee, Burrell, and Jones are the cream of the crop this year. Edmonds is getting the nod as he is getting voted in and, as is Beltran, who both might be taking spots from more deserving players. That officially leaves a roster crunch and when you thrown in the need to have one player from each team, Cliff Floyd’s chances of making the team get slimmer and slimmer. While he has undoubtedly been one of the top five outfielders, it will be tough for him to make it in what could be his best season as a pro.

Strangely enough, Carlos Beltran getting voted in may very well keep Cliff Floyd off the team despite deserving to be on the team. I do believe Cliff has a much better chance to make the team than David Wright, though a slim chance nonetheless. But what is truly amazing out of all of this is how a stud third baseman who is arguably having the best year out of any NL third baseman like David Wright and is playing in the biggest sports market in the world has garnered only 507,518 votes to date and only registers fifth in the NL voting for third baseman. Luckily for David, he will have plenty of other chances to make the team. In the end, 2005 will likely mark the sixth year the Mets send three representatives to the mid-summer classic.

We also still have that 32nd man voting that mlb.com does for about 4 days or so, a coupel of days before the All-Star game so maybe Floyd or Wright are included on that list and get on through there.

Kaz Icky has to be a lock!

Sorry, both Kaz’s were glaring ommissions. They are locks to go to Detroit with the steallar seasons they are putting up.

Benny, Wright does not seem to be getting any love. He needs to get on the map in a big way. But him and Floyd are presumably too far down in votes to be included in that 32nd man thing and that is shame.

Maybe Floyd will make it but not Wright. We’ll see.

Doesn’t the manager pick the five guys to be voted on? And if so, does LaRussa have any connection to Floyd? I can’t think of one.

As far as Wright goes, I love the guy, I voted for him 25 times, but as long as he’s making 5 errors a week he’s not a legitimate All-Star. I see him as a Wade Boggs type, I think he’s going to figure out the fielding stuff in a big way down the line. His offense is only going to improve as he ages. He’s got lots of All-Star trips ahead of him. It’s Floyd who needs it this year.

Carlos should do the right thing: stay home to rest his quad and plead w/ LaRussa to name Floyd in his place.

    Not a bad idea.

Clifford should at least make an apperance at the home run derby.

Or is that limited to people who are on the All Star Team?

Or is that limited to people who are on the All Star Team?

I’m not sure on the exact rules about that. Rafael Palmeiro was in last year’s HR Derby despite not being on the AL All Star Team, but if memory serves I believe they invited all the active players with 500+ HRs.

I think Piazza and Beltran getting voted in is going to hurt the chances of Floyd and Wright getting picked by LaRussa which is unfortunate because they are having better years. If any 3 should go, it should be Petey, Wright and Floyd. If they get more than 3, it will be Floyd. No way they will get 5 unless they were in first. Suprise, suprise though, the fans don’t know how to vote. Its a popularity contest. I think some people who post on this website (come out you Minky defenders) probably voted for Minky, that’s why he was #2 for so long which was absurd with the amount of 1B talent in the NL.

    1. I agree that Beltran should rest his quad rather than go to the All-Star Game.

    2. I’ve been convinced by other threads devoted to this topic that Piazza deserves to go. (I did vote for him.)

    3. I agree that based on merit, Floyd deserves to go.

    4. I think a good case can be made that Wright is deserving, despite his errors.

    5. I’d like to see Pedro voted in. However, I have no problem with him not going. It looks like his next two starts will be two consecutive ones going on 4 days rest, and he’ll probably pitch the Sunday before the All-Star Game. I’d rather see him take it easy than either pitch or even hang out in Detroit. He’ll be fresher for his next start. So, I wish the mediots would just shut up about Pedro’s possible “snub.” That gets really tedious.
