NY Post: Met Bullpen Has Graves Concerns

And now with more hits than Pretty Girls Make Graves…

“I said before the game he’s a part of our bullpen,” Willie Randolph said of Graves, whom the Reds designated for minor league assignment in May, thereby making him a free agent. His 7.76 ERA has since dipped to 7.56, but the Mets are still unsure of what they’ve got as he tries to regain the stuff that saved 41 games last year.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I am not that worried about Graves. Graves can be used in low-leverage innings and the Mets just have to hope he turns the corner. Bell, Heilman, Ring, and Hernandez can take care of the high-leverage innings. If Graves never turns the corner, then oh well, the experiment fails (hopefully without him costing the Mets any games), and then they can give Padilla a shot.

I agree. The Graves aquisition was a low risk move. If he gets his groove back, great. If not, no biggie. He shouldn’t be pitching any important late game situations until he’s really earned it by pitching well in mop up.

    Nice reference.

As I’ve said before, I have no problem with the Mets taking a flier on Graves, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. However, I never saw any reason whatsoever to let him find his groove at the major league level. At this point I have to think he’s wasting a roster spot that could have otherwise been filled by someone more useful. We have plenty of people that Willie only trusts to pitch low leverage innings. If Willie’s only going to use him like Manny Aybar, why not just use Manny Aybar? Cause at this point, Aybar’s the better pitcher (which ain’t saying much).

    Thanks. I’m no Repoz, though.

Graves is done and anyone who thought he wasn’t (or still isn’t) is just fooling himself. The Mets could have saved $800K and let a division rival tie up money and innings on him, but nooooo, that was too smart. Instead now we have a long-man who can’t go more than two innings.

Right… ’cause Graves’ roster spot could go to somebody useful to the club like “Ice” Williams or Awful Offerman.

I bet dollars to donuts that if Graves gets designated, his slot goes to Mike Matthews.

wake up man..Aybar was released weeks ago. Aybar had an awful track record as a failure. Graves has had a decent if not good track record. I think i’d rather go with Graves track record and put him on my roster. Remember Graves had 40+ saves last year. But as my friend mentioned so did Benitez…

The Graves acquisition may be the first truly foolish move of the Omar Minaya era, unless I missed something (I’m willing to give him a pass on the Ginter-for-Colyer trade as well as the Phillips-for-Ishii trade). Why one would pay $800,000 for a pitcher whose upside is as a league-average relief pitcher is beyond me. Graves would be overpaid if he were being paid the league minimum. If nothing else, $800,000 can buy you a lot of scouts.

I totally agree with taking a flier on Graves. If he works out, great. If not, no harm no foul as he was replacing Aybar. Look, the 25th guy on the roster is not going to see much time. Let him hold that spot and see what happens. If he gets his stuff back — great. If not, who cares, he is pitching mop-up anyway. The key is the way they use him.
