Ishiimania
by: Matt Gelb on Jun 29, 2005 11:27 PM | Filed under: Blog

Please, just save our souls. All we ask for is the termination of the perpetrator, one Kaz Ishii.

Is that such an astronomical burden on management? I know of a few people that can lend their assistance.

Get back to us on that offer.

I spent 10 years in the Marines - one high powered rifle and it is all over - a well aimed shot can just take out his leg - that is all we need!

The crappy thing is we lost a game on the same day the guy who should be our #5 starter through another gem at AAA - the four games we are out of the wilde card could be made up by simply dumping Ishii and replacing him with Seo.

From th elook on Willie’s face I think we’ve seen the last of Yesshhhhhiii. But the question I have is Willie had Heilman warm in the pen when he issued the third walk in a row and he had that MF’er look in his eyes why didn’t he yank Yesshhhi then. After the two run single by Bell I figure Willie is goning to jump out of the dugout and grab Yessssshi by the neck and bring in Heilman but no he lets him pitch to Utley and we all know the ugly result of that at bat.

yea this was ishiis shortest outing this year and willie looked pissed…like enuff is enuff….so most likely heilman will get the start…although i think jae seo is more deserving

  4. Comment posted by Dan in L.A. on June 30, 2005 at 3:11 am (#5685)

If Willie Randolph doesn’t replace Ishii with Heilman (or Seo), Willie Randolph should be fired (or shot).

  5. Comment posted by Keet in Incheon on June 30, 2005 at 6:32 am (#5686)

Well I certainly agree that Seo and/or Heliman deserve an opportunity to start it seems only last month that we were calling for the heads of Zambrano and Glavine. As much as I want to believe in this team, the truth is that until they prove otherwise, we have Pedro, an ok #2 in Benson and three below average #4-5 level starters. If you can’t even produce three starters with winning records, things don’t bode very well for the postseason. Also, I fear Darth Burrell may have taken on young Utley as his apprentice..

  6. Comment posted by Goldy on June 30, 2005 at 8:48 am (#5688)

Seo is the man here. I hate to say it, but I think Willie was right, Heilman is too versatile, too useful out of the pen. Seo should get the call to start regularly, let Heilman take spots and long relief.

  7. Comment posted by chris from Boston on June 30, 2005 at 8:51 am (#5689)

Kaz Icky is awful. He has had his chance and he has blown it. Fair enough. Time for a change (Seo or Heilman). Understand that from now on any Icky loss is actually a loss by Randolph and Omar. I will not blast Icky anymore but will blast them instead. He deserved a chance to turn it around but he did not do it. If he gets sent out to the slaughter, I cant blame him, he is doing what he is paid to do (but cant). Icky’s losses henceforth are directly attributable to Willie and Omar.

  8. Comment posted by sweetlew on June 30, 2005 at 9:36 am (#5692)

This is real simple - this team has a $100 million payroll and is being hamstrung by a guy who makes 2% of it - cut your losses and DFA him!

Seo needs to be called up to replace him and Heilman stays in the pen where he should be groomed and looked at as a potential closer for next year.

This also creates a space in AAA to promote either Bannister or Petit.

  9. Comment posted by Philly Mets Fan on June 30, 2005 at 10:23 am (#5694)

I have a funny feeling Seo is getting traded. So I am not sure he will be up any time soon.

Also, my g/f told me there were talks of a Mets/Skankees trade she over heard on Regis & Kelly…any know anything of this and who was involved? Sheffield? Seo? Cameron?

  10. Comment posted by Met Fan Charlie on June 30, 2005 at 10:27 am (#5695)

If someone had told us in — say — late 2002 that we’d be sitting here, mid-season future, saying “Man! I can’t wait until Trax comes back!” would we have believed them?

  11. Comment posted by Brian S. on June 30, 2005 at 10:38 am (#5697)

I am not going to try to defend Ishii, but I think I am more frustrated by Anderson in the 6 hole. Daubach is a lefty and has hit more HRs in 2 seasons as a regular than Anderson has in career. We all know Wright should be higher, but if that subborn a55 of a manager insists on righty-lefty in the lineup, then at least put someone in the 6 hole who has the chance of hitting a HR.

Floyd and Piazza were on with 2 out and we were down by 3 and Anderson struts to the plate. I could see the fear in Lidle’s eyes….

I have been trying to hold off on bashing Willy, but b/t Ishii and Anderson i am quickly losing my patients.

The Cameron/Sheffeild rumor was started by Omar and his minions to send a message to Met fans that he is hard at work. Now when he brings in Palmero we can all be dissapointed. The Yankees are desparate but Cameron for Sheffeild?!?!?!? Please.

  12. Comment posted by BklynPete on June 30, 2005 at 10:47 am (#5698)

I don’t think Ishii will have a lot of value on the trade market. I would rather see the Mets move Ishii into the middle relief role. He’s got to be better than Danny Graves.

  13. Comment posted by Goldy on June 30, 2005 at 11:10 am (#5701)

Ishii doesn’t have enough control or mental toughness to be successful in the bullpen.

The fact remains: you walk the leadoff man, you’re going to lose. Simple as that. Graves and Looper had better figure that out right quick, but Ishii’s had his chance. Someone hit the gong already.

  14. Comment posted by Benny Blanco from da Bronx on June 30, 2005 at 11:12 am (#5702)

Who cares if Ishii has value? If you can get ANY player for Ishii then you have done your job as a GM.

  15. Comment posted by Danny on June 30, 2005 at 11:30 am (#5708)

I wonder why Ishii was ever so highly regarded while in Japan. He has no command of his pitches whatsoever, and the movement on his pitches is inconsistent as well. I know he is left-handed, but come on. I say designate him for assigment and recall Seo. Something needs to be done. He is 2-7, he has gotten his chance.

  16. Comment posted by Rene R. on June 30, 2005 at 12:00 pm (#5709)

If I see this guy Ishi start 1 more game I think that my respect for our baseball people is lost….Wait that happend @ last years trade deadline! I’m upbeat about the comming deadline because I don’t think Minaya would make a dum trade so I ask Mets Geek writer to tell me why the Mets are not into this A. Dunn Market???

As I see it Dunn can play 1st base for the next 10 years if our front office woke up before his shipped to our rivals. yea I know we are gonna have to give back alot but if anyones worth it Dunn is. That Lefty bat @ shea wiould be perfect.

By the way I was the one screaming for them to get interested in N. Johnson before we signed Minky!!! Come on Leader of the New Mets don’t let Dunn get away…Take care boys.

  17. Comment posted by NYLeetch2 on June 30, 2005 at 12:28 pm (#5714)

Everyone keeps saying ishii doesnt have enough control for the bullpen. It certainly does seem that way, but if we look closer Ishii is always fine the first time through the lineup. He usually lasts through the 4th or 5th before breaking down. Last night he only lasted through three, but you’ll notice second time through the lineup he just loses his confidence and stops throwing strikes. Then Willie leaves him in just long enough for him to overcompensate and groove one right over the plate to seal the game so he can bring in Heilman for mop-up duty. Perhaps coming out of the bullpen and facing lineups only once through will work for Ishii? Either that or just have Heilman ready every Ishii start and just bring him in for the 4th or 5th inning and avoid Ishii’s break-down inning.

Whoops I posted my response to this in the Minor league talk.

It is just unbelievable how clueless they are, we have Seo in waiting and they refuse to part with this guy.

I mean seriously are the Mets trying to beat the Reds for the most poorly run organization in baseball?

All this talent we have and we trot DeJean out there and Matusi and Ishii and we actually have guys to replace these guys, just UNREAL.

STOP PAYING ATTEN TO HOW THE YANKS DO THINGS AND PAY ATTEN TO THE BRAVES. YOU DON’T GET THE JOB DONE YOU ARE SENT PACKING AND SOMEONE ELSE IS GIVEN A CHANCE, TRY IT SOMETIME, SHEESH.

    Sorry, I’m starting to crack

Those are good points NYLeetch2 about Ishii in the pen — it might not be as bad as people think. The guy was pretty good with the Dodgers, so I don’t think we should just drop him. Similar to the way we are giving Graves the chance to revitalize his career by throwing him out there in mop up games, why not do the same with Isshii? Nothing to lose (although, it is kind of a waste to take up 2 roster spots for “experimental” purposes).

    There it is.

    Batting 6th ….Anderson.

Willy is as dumb as he is stubborn.

  21. Comment posted by Danny on June 30, 2005 at 2:05 pm (#5720)

The best part about Anderson batting 6th is that Woodward is batting 8th. So Willie is forced to prostitute his L/R lineup anyway. Yet he still bats Wright 7th. I am starting to hate him (trying to be patient).

  22. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 2:21 pm (#5721)

I know I’m just being mean here, but whenever they show Willie in the dugout, he just looks kinda…lost.

  23. Comment posted by Brian S. on June 30, 2005 at 2:25 pm (#5722)

You know what else is frustrating. Beltran he dipped below .260 with his 0-2 so far today. The Met curse is way stronger than I thought. Bearga(sp), Alomar, Mo, Samuel etc…ok those guys were on the downside, but we somehow broke a guy who was freaking superman in the playoffs. A 40-40 threat, he has 8 Hrs and 1 Sb…it is laughable.

  24. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 2:28 pm (#5723)

I agree…I know he’s hurt, but God has he been pitiful. I can’t figure out why they’re so eager to shove Cameron out the door.

This is becoming a big refrain, but can Omar find any bullpen arms at all? These guys are terrible. I can’t believe Pedro hasn’t blown his top. He could be 13 and 2. It’s scary when the idiot manager brings in any of these guys

    Free Jae Seo!

  29. Comment posted by Brian S. on June 30, 2005 at 3:27 pm (#5729)

did anyone see the pitch count when he pulled Pedro? I wonder if he is banged up? He was decent enough to go 7 especially when you consider the alternatives.

Beltran just stole 2nd and 3rd.

  30. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 3:28 pm (#5730)

    Brian,

    Pedro was at 99 pitches.

    1 more pitch, Brian?

  33. Comment posted by Rob on June 30, 2005 at 4:23 pm (#5736)

Reds are shopping Dunn for a young arm. How about Cameron and Seo for Dunn. Dunn is 25,plays the corner outfield spot, can hit the ball a ton and isn’t a free agent till after the ‘07 season.

    He fit
s the New Mets young mold.

  34. Comment posted by ActionPif on June 30, 2005 at 4:26 pm (#5737)

Beltran may have lit up the basepaths today in his now-routine short stay on base, but the stat I witnessed in the box score today that stuck out to me a like a drunk man at a Youth group meeting, and seemed unfathomable just a few weeks ago:

    Piazza BA: .267
    Beltran BA: .258

    Holy snap, children.

  35. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 7:10 pm (#5740)

    Rob,
again, why is everyone so eager to get rid of Cameron?? From where I stand right now, Cameron is twice the player Beltran is.

  36. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 7:13 pm (#5741)

Hurt or not, Beltran has looked verrrry average this year. This may sound extreme, but if he’s still playing like this a year from now, see if the Yankees still need that CF. :)

  37. Comment posted by Jim on June 30, 2005 at 7:33 pm (#5745)

seriously you guys are nuts… we found out Monday that Beltran for the first time in a while is 100% healthy and you guys are spouting off trade him and he looks very average this year. fickle, fairweather fans. the same guys who were urging a trade of piazza a few weeks ago now are touting his average. beltran finally steals some bases and this is the thanks he gets. you guys are unbelievable. brian cashman would give his left nut for beltran cuz his team would have a future. i predict a monster 2nd half for Beltran. And his average has been fairly decent all year long despite the injuries (except for recently).

  38. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 7:51 pm (#5746)

    .258, 8 HR, 3 SB…in half a season…for 18 mil per year…who’s nuts?

  39. Comment posted by Randy on June 30, 2005 at 7:54 pm (#5747)

P.S., average really doesn’t mean all that much; I don’t think Beltran was brought here to win a batting title. He was brought here to be a perennial MVP candidate.

  40. Comment posted by Brian S. on June 30, 2005 at 9:44 pm (#5750)

Jim, I think you are missing the point. At no point did anyone say the Beltran should be traded. I have been a Met fan for 25+ years there hasn’t been a whole lot of fair weather. The point I was making actually has very little to do with Beltran and everything to do with guys seems to “lose” skills when they are here. I don’t think that that has happend here, BUT in you cannot say that he has not been a little disappointing up to this point. He should be can’t miss, but so far he’s kinda just ok. I will be the first one to point out that he has been hampered. In fact, I wrote to the Sportsline.com writer who called him a bust and never mentioned his leg problems. Only us Met fans are allowed to criticize…

Randy, don’t get snowed by Cameron’s performance so far. It is definitly a divergence from the mean. He is career .250 hitter with a little pop. What makes him good is his center feild play which he is not playing for us. That makes him less valueable to the Mets and more valuable to a team with a center field hole. Sell high.

I hope and expect Beltran to have a good second half, we are going to need it.

As far as Piazza goes i never called for a trade b/c 1) it will never happen 2) I would like him to finish his contract/career with the Mets. He is one of the best Mets of all time. Now with that said, he should not be hitting 5 let alone 4 at this point in his career. He is a 36 year old aging cather who in reality would be hitting 7th if we had a little more offense or a manager who wasn’t a subborn a55.

  41. Comment posted by Randy on July 1, 2005 at 11:13 am (#5789)

    Brian,

You’re right about Cameron’s average, but he also averages a 20-20 season with great defense. I’m just not convinced that Diaz can do anything close to matching that. As far as Dunn goes…you know how I feel about him. If you think Beltran’s a dissapointment, wait till we got Dunn in Shea.

  42. Comment posted by Brian S. on July 1, 2005 at 11:32 am (#5794)

Yeah, I am not sold on Dunn either. Is he better than Burnitz? I am not sure. He is young though. Maybe Peterson can fix him in 10 mins….

  43. Comment posted by Jim on July 1, 2005 at 5:29 pm (#5859)

The point I was making is he’s not healthy so no wonder he looks average. Of course he has been a dissapointment cuz he’s been hurt! I think with all the expectations, he has been playing hurt all year long because with the huge contract and the fans anticipation he didn’t want to let them down. I don’t think you can say he’s done based on a half season, most of which he was hurt. I don’t buy the Shea Stadium arguments either. Sure its a hitters park but somehow Cliff Floyd seems to be doing alright this year. Beltran is not a fluke. I’ll say it again, I predict a monster 2nd half. What he did in the playoffs last year was unbeliveable and I think you’ll start to see some of that again.
